Writing
At Wimborne Primary School, we place high value on the development of writing and are committed to equipping our pupils with the skills to write effectively for a variety of purposes. Our approach to teaching writing is structured around two key components: transcription and composition.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1), children begin by learning to form letters using print handwriting. As they progress into Key Stage 2 (KS2), this transitions into cursive handwriting to support fluency and presentation. In EYFS, pupils are introduced to correct letter formation and gradually develop the ability to construct short sentences. Supported by the Monster Phonics programme, they learn to segment words for spelling and are encouraged to write for different purposes during discovery time.
In KS1, children continue to refine their handwriting and spelling skills while exploring a range of writing genres. They use WAGOLLs (What A Good One Looks Like) to guide and inspire their own writing. By KS2, pupils write for increasingly varied purposes, with a strong emphasis on understanding and applying grammar. They are given frequent opportunities to practise new writing techniques before applying them in extended pieces. Many writing units are linked to class readers, allowing deeper exploration of character, setting, and plot. Spelling instruction in KS2 is supported by ‘Superhero Spellings’, which builds on phonics and introduces broader strategies.
Writing is embedded across the curriculum, with pupils given regular opportunities to apply their skills in other subject areas.
